8 uPVC Myth Busters

There are many myths about uPVC - let's try to put the record straight!

You will probably have noticed that uPVC is more popular than ever when it comes to the installation of new windows, doors and extensions, but there are still many who remain to be convinced about the benefits it offers. So let’s try to put the record straight by addressing some widely held misconceptions…

Myth 1: ‘uPVC needs constant maintenance’

Truth: This is absolutely not the case – with uPVC windows and doors, whatever colour you choose, it will not need repainting and they will stay looking good for years to come. Just washing your windows is all that’s needed to keep them in tip-top condition. There are lasting benefits, too – uPVC’s durability allows it to withstand the elements, so it won’t rot or fade, like wood, or corrode as aluminium does.

Myth 2: ‘It’s environmentally unfriendly’

Truth: For many homeowners, good eco-credentials are vital and the great news is that where Independent Network is concerned, old uPVC products need never die – they can simply be recycled to produce superior-quality windows, doors and conservatories. Believe it or not, uPVC can be recycled up to 10 times, so a window with an average life of 35 years can theoretically be extended to 350 years.

Myth 3: ‘uPVC tends to discolour’

Truth: In decades past, a yellowing or greying was known to occur over time, but with the advancement of technology and better-quality materials being used in uPVC manufacturing, this is no longer a problem.

Myth 4: ‘uPVC looks unattractive’

Truth: Thanks to a wider-than-ever range of styles, colours and finishes, uPVC windows and doors are not only stylish in their own right, but can be virtually indistinguishable from their timber counterparts. You can also customise them to match the rest of your home, creating a clean, smooth aesthetic.

Myth 5: ‘The double-glazing trade doesn’t have a good reputation’

Truth: The industry today is a highly respected one, though it’s still a good idea to choose a body such as the Independent Network, which is a nationwide organisation representing only the very best local uPVC window and door companies in the industry. It’s not easy to become a member installer, so homeowners know that when they see the Independent Network logo, that company is committed to upholding strict standards of workmanship, training and customer satisfaction.

Myth 6: ‘uPVC comes only in white’

Truth: Gone are the days when white was the only option and Independent Network now gives you access to a range of 29 stylish colours and woodgrain options. You can even choose different colours for inside and out – for example, a green exterior to reflect the verdant surroundings and a subtle hue to blend in with your decor. Add to that the wide range of hardware combining good looks with high-security features and there’s no end to the style and inspiration on offer.

Myth 7: ‘Installing uPVC windows won’t prevent condensation’

Truth: Condensation affects most homes, and it can increase the more insulated your home is. But preventing condensation is surprisingly simple – improving the air flow in your home by installing trickle vents (good uPVC windows will include these), periodically opening windows, and using a dehumidifier will all help to stop condensation becoming a problem.

Myth 8: ‘You need planning permission to change windows and doors’

Truth: Unless you live in a period property or conservation area, planning permission is not usually required to install uPVC windows and doors. But if you’re unsure, check with your local authority.
